What might be causing your pain?

It is not always easy to put your finger on the problem in your shoulder. However, shoulder problems do tend to cause pain in typical locations and the pain is often worse while moving, or just after moving your shoulder.

Lift your arm slowly in front of you over your head (as far as you can) and bring it down again.  Think where you feel the most pain in your shoulder either during, or just after the movement. Use the diagram below to help give you an idea of what might be your problem.  You can then look in more detail at the relevant information on common conditions to be found on this website.  Of course, this simplistic method does not seek to, nor can it replicate a surgical consultation, but it will hopefully help you find out more about common problems in the shoulder that might be relevant to you.
